(My laptop wont allow me to move pictures on blogger so my contents has to be where it appears after uploading) I thought of this idea (school style notepad) for my contents page initially but realised it was actually quite childish and relfected more of a primary school pupils attitude rather than a college students.Sean Meek

(Magazine Coursework)
So far I have filled in the LIIAR for my work:
Language
Not too formal as it is aimed at students, but formal enough to make them feel mature (and so it can apply to the staff members)
Institution
The institution is the company who will produce the magazine, in this case Wyke college will be the Institution.
Ideology
Events and activites at college
Audience
Wyke students, Wyke Staff, Certain areas of the magazine with be aimed at a niché
Representation
The magazine will show off the cliques of the college
To get more of an idea as to how college and school magazines are put together, I will now deconstruct this issue of "Secondary" and make note of it's conventions, dennotations and connotations.“Secondary” is a teaching magazine for secondary school teachers. For my following piece of work I will deconstruct the denotations and connotations of this front cover.
The image on the left is actually the back cover, but when fully opened adds another image to the front cover.
The two covers are very similar and the only difference apart from the pictures is that some of the text on the front cover is blue and on the back cover, it is pink. This will appeal to the boys (blue) and the girls (pink). Creating a wider audience. The two choices of colour are very smart, as they are both colours associated with genders (Boys tend to like blue and Girls normally like pink) Also they are both very relaxed colours, light blue representing; freedom, freshness and serenity. Pink connotates; sensitive, delicate and youthful qualities. One the page with the boy, the word "plus" is written in pink, (and vice versa for the female student) which puts the two specific features of the different pages into each other, showing diversity, much like the fact the two students are both of a different gender.
The picture was taken from directly infront of the the two students, putting us in the shoes of the teacher, being watched by the students. Or it can be seen as us watching the students. The male student has his hand up and is smiling, so it appears we are watching the children learning and having fun at the same time. The boys arm is covering part of the masthead, but it could have easily been sent to the back so the word covered his arm, to me this shows that he is more important and that in their job the teachers will have to put the students first. Also, the cinematography has placed us very close to the students, and out eye level is their eye level, showing more of a connection between us (the teacher) and the students.
The background is negative space (white). And the rest of the picture is lighted quite strongly. This is to show that only the students are of importance, in the same way for the teacher the students are the most important factor of their job. This is the ideology of the magazine.
The students are represented as clearly having an interest in learning, shown by the fact that they are both looking happy, and the boy is participating in the lesson and smiling. They are both wearing a sterotypical uniform and look well dressed and smart for school, which also shows their enthusiasm and obedience at school.
Like all magazines this one had its own conventions, such as:
- Masthead
- Sub-headings
- Image
- Ideology
- Plugs
- Text

I'm now going to do the same to the contents page of the magazine.
The main colour featured in this part of the magazine is green, it’s associated with the new growth of spring, prosperity, and clean, fresh air. I think this colour has been chosen to reflect on the calm hearted and relaxed nature of the magazine and students.
There are pictures of students on the spread. Two of which look like they are reading the magazine outside of school time, re-inforcing the positive sides of learning and the magazine. Another student looks like she is conducting some sort of experiment and enjoying herself (again re-inforcing the positive ideology of the magazine).
The contents themselves are divided into two sections, a "regulars" and a "features". "Regulars" containing the text you would find in every issue of the magazine, and "features" showing the one-off things that are special to this issue. Most of the headings for each article/text are somehow related back to school work ,(or something close to it), such as: "As easy as A, B, C or...", "Master pieces" & "Staffroom".
Just like the front cover, a contents page has its own conventions to follow:
- Easy navigation around the magazine
- Plugs
- Somesort of relation to the previous issue (Letters or competition results)
- Pictures related to some of the stories
- A simple layout that is easy to understand
I'm now going to de-construct the "primary" edition of the magazine
The contents page is essentialy the same, with a few minor differences, which when related to the fact this is for primary teachers, changes alot about the spread.
The main colours of the page are purple and pink. Purple can be seen as representing elegance, and pink shows the innocent, soothing, relaxing, fresh, happy, playful & pure nature of the children. Some of the headings on the contents are coloured differently, the articles which involve specific people or methods.
There is a paper aeroplane on the second page, which is often seen as a classic iconographic image of classrooms, although usually seen as a nuisance to the teacher, it is here shown to be a lighthearted referance to primary school.
This is the new front cover for my premiliminary task. I re did it because I did not have a headline, I feel I have significantly improved it.
